Pumpkin Spice Crazy Quilt

Pumpkin Spice Crazy Quilt
Print Print

This spicy quilt was inspired by the zesty colors of the season. Crazy Quilts are simple to make once you learn the basic technique. Decorate this bold quilt with hand or machine embroidery.

Skill Level: Advanced

Time to Complete: 60 Hours

Tools Needed:

Materials Needed:
  • 20 – 17” squares of muslin
  • ½ yard each of at least 24 different fabrics cut into 3 inch strips
  • 6 yards of fabric for backing
  • Various threads for embellishing
  1. For each 17" square, start by placing a 5-sided piece of fabric in the center.  Stitch along one edge only.
  2. Cut a rectangle of another fabric and place on top of the first piece along sewn edge, right sides together, raw edges even. Sew the edge together.  Flip this piece over to hide the seam and reveal the right side of the fabric. Press well.
  3. Continue adding fabrics using this same method, going clockwise around the block.
  4. Be sure to cover all raw edges until muslin backing is completely covered. Trim and press well after each fabric addition.
  5. Crazy quilt all 20 squares in this manner. Embellish each as desired. Press well.
Square blocks using the 16 ½" ruler.
  6. With right sides together, stitch blocks together using a ½" seam allowance. The quilt will be 4 squares wide by 5 squares long. Embellish seams.
  7. With right sides together, sew backing to quilt front, leaving a 6" opening for turning. Turn right side out. Slip stitch opening closed.
