This Christmas Blossom is a classic and simple circular quilt pattern, sometimes called Pumpkin Pie, which is quilted as you go. Try it with silks or satins for a festive look.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Time to Complete: 4 Hours to Complete

Tools Needed:

Materials Needed:
  • Washable marking pencil or Chalk Marker
  • 1-1/2 yards each of 2 coordinating Holiday Fabrics - 2 contrasting colors and/or patterns, one solid and one print for example
  • Basic Sewing Supplies
Instructions
  1. Instructions for 72" x 16" Table Runner -- Cut 18 - 8 1/2” circles from both fabrics using your rotary circle cutter. You will have a total of 36 circles.
  2. Place two circles right sides together, one solid, one print.
  3. Sew together, using a scant 1/4" seam allowance, leaving a small opening for turning.
  4. Turn circles right side out. Use a point turning tool to keep the edges nice and round. A chopstick works great for this. Slip stitch opening closed if desired. Press carefully. Tip: To keep the shape of your circles, “press” them, don’t iron.
  5. Place two circle sets together, right sides facing out. Pin.
  6. Using your ruler, measure 1 inch from pinned edge and mark with pencil.
  7. Stitch circles together using pencil mark as seam line. Press petal shaped seams open to expose fabric underneath.
  8. Continue sewing circles sets together into rows until desired size. Stitch rows
  9. together, as above, using the 1” pencil marks as your seam allowance. Press.
  10. If you like, you may topstitch the seams in place using a decorative stitch in contrasting rayon thread, add beading or embroidery to embellish.
  11. For a padded table runner, place 8" circles of batting in between circles before you sew them together.
  12. For matching placemats, simply sew 4 circles together to make a square which is the perfect size for your holiday dinner ware!
