Celebrate your freedom this year by creating a red, white and blue square quilt. This patriotic piece can be used as a table topper or wall hanging sure to spark interest from your summertime guests.

Materials Needed:
  • ⅜ yard white fabric
  • yard red star fabric
  • 1¼ yard blue star fabric
  • yard striped fabric    
Instructions
  1. Pre-construction:
  2. Cut the white fabric as follows:
  3. One strip 4⅞" wide, sub-cut into eight 4⅞" squares        
  4. One strip 6¾" wide, sub-cut into sixteen 6¾" x 2⅛" rectangles
  5. Cut the red star fabric as follows:
  6. One strip 4⅞" wide, sub-cut into eight 4⅞" squares
  7. Two strips 2½" wide, sub-cut into four 2½" x 11½ " rectangles, which will make the sashing between the four large blocks
  8. Four strips 2½" wide, sub-cut into four 2½" x 24½" rectangles, which will make the first border
  9. Cut the blue star fabric as follows:
  10. One strip 4⅞" wide, sub-cut into eight 4⅞" squares
  11. One strip 2½" wide, sub-cut into nine 2½ " squares, which will make the center square and cornerstones in the first and second borders
  12. Four strips 5" wide, sub-cut into two 5" x 32½", making the third border sides
  13. Sub-cut into two 5" x 41½", making the third border top and bottom
  14. Cut the striped fabric as follows: 
  15. Four strips 2½" wide, sub-cut into four 2½" x 28½", which become the second border 
  16. Construction:
  17. Use a ¼” seam allowance
  18. To create the four large pinwheel squares
  19. Take one white 4⅞” square and one blue 4⅞” square, layer right-sides together.
  20. Cut diagonally
  21. Repeat seven more times
  22. Sew one side of the 16 triangle sets together
  23. Iron seam to the blue fabric
  24. Cut the eight red squares diagonally. Sew a white rectangle 2⅛” x 6¾” to each of the sixteen triangles
  25. Iron the seam to the red fabric
  26.  Trim the white fabric at a diagonal using the red triangle as your guide
  27.  Sew a blue set to a red set to create a block
  28. Repeat 15 more times
  29. Sew four blocks together to create a pinwheel
  30. Repeat three more times
  31. Join two top pinwheels by a red strip 2½” x 11½”
  32. Join two bottom pinwheels by a red strip 2½” x 11½”
  33. Join two 2½” x 11½” red star strips with a 2½” blue square
  34. To create the first border:
  35. Sew red star fabric to the two sides 2½" x 24½"
  36. Sew two blue 2½" square cornerstones to the ends of both of the 2 ½“ x 24½“ red strips
  37. Sew one strip to top and the other to the bottom 
  38. To create the second border:
  39. Sew striped fabric to the two sides 2½" x 28½"
  40. Sew two blue 2½” square cornerstones to the ends of both of the striped fabric pieces 2½" x 28½"
  41. Sew one strip to the top and the other to the bottom 
  42. To create the third border:
  43. Sew two blue strips to the sides 5" x 32½"
  44. Sew two blue strips to the top and bottom 5" x 41½"
  45. Quilt and bind
