5 Super Kids’ Craft Kits for Summer

Jun 1, 2015 By OLFA Creates

Before you know it, school’s out. YIKES! Rather than fretting what to do, bring on summer and fun ideas to keep active kids busy. Plan now and you can premake some cool grab-and-go DIY craft kits so the kids have something fresh and fun to keep them busy when there’s “nothin’ to do.” Keep it exciting by sealing the craft kits in a box or envelope. Every time they open one, it’s a surprise adventure.

To help quickly and precisely produce these craft kits, use OLFA® rotary cutters, rulers and cutting mats. Make a few extra kits so friends can join the fun. The mess of cutting paper and fabric scraps and chasing down supplies will be done, so it’s all hands-on action when the craft fun begins.

Here are 5 fantastic DIY craft kit ideas to keep the kids entertained and your sanity perfectly intact during summer downtime!

DIY MINI-ME PAPER DOLLS KIT

Print out a full-length picture of your child and cut it out. Laminate it if you wish. Cut paper and cloth clothing for kids to dress their personalized paper dolls. Add yarn, additional paper and cloth scraps, markers, a glue stick and other accessories. Children can make shoes, more
clothing, hats, hair accessories, glasses and more. Their imaginations and fashion sense have no limits!

What you’ll need:

  • Full-length photo of your child
  • Lamination (optional)
  • Colored paper and fabric scraps
  • OLFA Rotary Cutter and Cutting Mat [LINK: http://www.olfa.com/quilt-and-craft-products/ ](makes prep quick and easy)
  • Glue stick
  • Washable, nontoxic markers
  • Sequins, glitter, buttons and other embellishments
  • Fashion magazines for inspiration (optional)
  • Scissors (appropriate for age)
  • Large-size envelope, medium box or SNAPWARE® SNAP ‘N STACK® 6″X 9″ RECTANGLE – 2 LAYERS

2. BOOKMARK BONANZA KIT

Precut several rectangular strips of paper in a variety of colors, then punch two holes in the top of each strip. Add small balls of scrap colored yarn, stickers and other goodies to personalize and decorate each bookmark. Kids can make DIY pom-poms with the yarn. Tie the yarn and pom-poms to the top of each bookmark (through the punched holes). Bookmarks can be a fun way to keep summer reading interesting, or to pass on to friends, grandparents or sell at a garage sale or lemonade stand.

What you’ll need:

3. AWESOME PAPER CHAIN MESSAGES KIT

Cut many strips of different colored paper and place in a kit with a glue stick and different colored markers. Ask children to write an awesome and encouraging message to other members of the household on each strip. Assign a specific color to each family member. For example, messages for Mom could be on green paper, red for Dad and different colors for siblings. Write compliments and messages of love to each family member, then create a paper chain with those messages, gluing or taping each strip shut to form interlocking paper loops. Hang the chain and open one link each day until the uplifting paper chain is gone.

What you’ll need:

4. THEATER PROPS KIT

Create theater props from card stock paper and Popsicle sticks. Using black, brown, red and white paper, cut out mustaches and funny-shaped beards. Precut different colors of paper into other prop accessories such as hair bows, glasses or hats. Add a glue stick or heavy-duty tape to the kit, then kids can assemble their own props and put on an incredible play or “movie trailer,” or mug for funny selfies!

What you’ll need:

5. DIY WOODLAND CREATURES KIT

Place toilet paper and paper towel rolls, construction paper (measured and cut to the exact size to cover the rolls), glue sticks, scissors, googly eyes, pom-poms and buttons in a container. Children can make adorable woodland creatures from these simple supplies (think bears, rabbits, squirrels and foxes). Use the pom-poms for ears and the buttons for noses. These cuddly creatures are super fun to make but also great for hours of imaginary play.

What you’ll need:

Make these kits, then kick back. Your summer activity list is totally covered. Great for rainy days or lazy days, DIY craft kits will be the best things to happen since school’s out.
