Amanda Herring is April’s Designer Spotlight. Amanda has a whimsical and sophisticated style. She works a lot in the quillting and sewing world, but in a way that is different and unique from the rest of the market. Amanda likes to try new things and figure out new ways to manipulate fabric and fabric-like substrates. After spending time on Amanda’s blog (www.thequiltedfish.typepad.com), and talking with her at the International Quilt Market last fall, we knew we wanted to work with her more!

When asked to tell us about herself, here’s what Amanda told us:

I am a wife, a mother, and a lover of all things creative. I don’t have a favorite color as that would be discrimination. I love good food, good people and good fabric. I have a deep desire to make the world a better place and feel like creative people are the key to making that happen.

Ready to hear more? So were we! We asked Amanda a few questions, and here are her responses.

What is your favorite OLFA tool & why?
My blue 45mm rotary cutter is my favorite. I love the feel of it. A close second is my 28mm rotary cutter which works wonderfully for cutting out paper piecing shapes with small rulers.

What size ruler could you not live without?
The 6″ x 24″! It’s my favorite ruler!!

What is the unsung hero of your sewing box?
I have two sewing box heroes. My amazing carved wood seam ripper and my Purple Thang (a great tool for poking out corners!).

Are you as clever in the kitchen as you are in your sewing space?
I absolutely love to cook! I find cooking to be very relaxing, and there is something very satisfying about preparing a beautiful meal.

What important piece of advice would you offer someone on the brink of quilting?
Don’t be too worried about all of the rules. It can be intimidating to start if you feel like you have to be perfect from the beginning. Start somewhere, then add skills as you go. Your first quilt probably won’t be perfect, and that is just fine! Enjoy the process!

Who taught you to sew or quilt?
When I was 10 my mom enrolled me in sewing classes. My teacher’s name was Kathy. I would ride my bike to class every week and I absolutely loved it!
