Designer Spotlight Simple Simon
Designer Spotlight Simple Simon
Simple Simon and Company consists of Elizabeth and liZ, who married brothers and just happen to have the same name! They blog about their love of sewing, quilting, and the art of homemaking. They are also the same age, each have three children, drive the same exact minivan, and are both former school teachers. Needless to say, they have a lot in common!
To figure out what else they were on the same wavelength about, we asked them a few questions!
What is your favorite OLFA tool & why?
Elizabeth: The rotating mat for cutting quilting blocks is my absolute favorite OLFA tool!
liZ: The OLFA rotary cutter. I even use it to cut sewing patterns!
What is your favorite OLFA rotary cutter & why?
When do you do your most creative work?
Elizabeth: I love to work in the early morning after everyone has gone to work or school. I hurry and pick up the house as fast as I can, and then I get my sewing reward time. I love those couple of hours and find myself getting the most done during the day. After a certain point at night, my brain turns off and I start making lots of mistakes.
liZ: I dream about projects during the day, but the actual creative work most often happens late at night when everyone is in bed.
Which comes first: the pattern or the fabric?
Elizabeth: I would say the fabrics for me. I love to pick out the fabrics and then coming up with a pattern to make those fabrics shine.
liz: The fabrics, for sure.
Is there a time of year that you barely touch needle & thread?
Both: No never…both of our sewing machines stay out year-round and they are used almost every day.
What important piece of advice would you offer someone on the brink of quilting?
Elizabeth: Quilting is imperfectly perfect. I think sometimes new quilters get caught up in perfect points, or perfect seams. It’s remembering that the person you are giving the quilt to will never notice your points or seams. They will only cherish the quilt for the love that was sewn into it.
liZ: Warning…once you start, you won’t want to stop!
How many WIP’s do you have lying around right now?
Elizabeth: At least ten.
What is something most people would be surprised to know about you?
Elizabeth: I am actually pretty shy in real life. I tend to be a quieter person in crowds.
liZ: I am afraid of bunnies.
Who taught you to sew or quilt?
Elizabeth: My mom, my grandma, and good Home Ec teachers!
liZ: A compilation of family, friends and patterns.

SPOTLIGHT PROJECT: SAWTOOTH STAR BABY QUILT
The Desert Star Quilt is designed to showcase many fabrics and comes together quickly, as it is made with larger sized blocks. You could also use the same techniques shown to make a larger quilt with this versatile pattern. Since it is made of half-square triangle quilt blocks, a basic building block in quilting, it's perfect for a beginner!
