The January Spotlight Designer is Sara Lawson.

We love Sara’s whimsical fabric patterns and stunning bag designs, and if you don’t know about her already, let us introduce you!

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT SARA

Sara Lawson, of Sew Sweetness, designs bag sewing patterns and fabric. Sara is out of Chicago, Illinois, where she lives with her husband and two children. We asked Sara a few questions, and here are her responses:

What is your favorite OLFA rotary cutter and why?
Lately the Splash is my favorite because it’s easy to use and comfortable to hold.

What is the unsung hero of your sewing box?
I love Frixxion pens and Clover Chaco Pens. And Clover Wonder Clips are a necessity!

Which comes first: the pattern or the fabric?
It depends. Often times I will design a bag pattern around a particular fabric.

What important piece of advice would you offer someone on the brink of quilting?
Sew as often as you can. The only way you can get better at something is to do it often. They don’t necessarily have to be difficult projects, but just keep doing.

What is the dominant color in your stash?
I have rainbow colors of prints and of solids.

Who taught you how to sew or quilt?
I learned from my mother when I was in the 3rd grade, but I didn’t pick sewing up again until after I had my first child. I learned about quilting from my blogging friends.

If you could choose one for free, which would it be: a new sewing machine or a long-arm?
I think I’m happy with the sewing machine I have now (Juki TL-2010Q). It would interesting to learn how to long-arm, but I’m not sure I’d use it enough to warrant my own machine.

From where (or whom) do you draw inspiration?
There are so many on-line friends and blog readers that I am inspired by every day!

SPOTLIGHT PROJECT – BAKER STREET BAG

Sara created a special project for us to share! This lovely bag is called the “Baker Street Bag”. The finished size is 12” long x 8” tall x 4” deep. It is a great bag for holding all the necessities, without the temptation to throw in everything including the kitchen sink (you know what we’re talking about!).
