Amanda Jean Nyberg blogs at Crazy Mom Quilts, and is an expert at using scraps for quilting or small projects. If you’re like us, you can’t help but be impressed with the variety of creations Amanda Jean has come up with, sometimes starting with a scrap most people would toss in the trash. From pin cushions and pillows, to quilt alongs and blog hops, we recommend taking a moment to visit Crazy Mom Quilts and find a little inspiration for your little fabric scraps.

Amanda Jean, tell us about yourself.

I’m a mom to three kids…two boys and a girl. I have a wonderful husband that puts up with my craziness. I am so thankful for my family. I love to share, teach and inspire others to quilt! When it comes to quilting, I love scraps most of all, and get a huge kick out of rescuing fabric. I hope that I never tire of turning what some people might view as unusable scraps into beautiful things.

What is your favorite OLFA tool & why?

The Splash rotary cutter! The aqua color is perfect and the quick change blade is such a wonderful feature.

What size ruler could you not live without?

6” x 24”, without a doubt!

When do you do your most creative work?

My kids are school-aged, so I have a pretty structured work day. It’s nice to have the flexibility of working at home but the structure that the school day brings is also welcome. During the summer, it’s a little harder to juggle everything. I still manage to fit in some sewing time, it’s just filled with interruptions. I like to have a hand sewing project going at all times so I can fit in some stitching, even if it isn’t at my machine.

Are you as clever in the kitchen as you are in your sewing space?

I do like to cook for my family! I’m excited that we are approaching fall, which means it’s nearly soup season. It might be my favorite!

Is there a time of year that you barely touch needle & thread?

Summer is definitely a bit harder, but I still manage to squeeze in sewing time…for sanity sake.

How many WIP’s do you have lying around right now?

23! I know that is a lot, but I have a list posted right above my ironing board, which keeps me on track. I’m trying to whittle down that number a little bit, but there always seems to be a new project calling my name.

From where (or whom) do you draw inspiration?

Inspiration can be found in so many forms and at the most random times. Sometimes it can be from a man hole cover in the street, or the color or shape of a flower in my back yard, or from a patterned shirt that someone on TV is wearing. Inspiration really is everywhere if you open your eyes. Sometimes it gets overwhelming, but then again, I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Choose some of your most precious fabric scraps and sew them up into a bright and cheery pillow cover. The envelope backing is a quick and easy way to finish the project and makes it kid and pet friendly because it’s easy to launder. Make several pillow covers in different color ways and change them out for each season.
