December Designer Spotlight: Brenda Ratliff

December Designer Spotlight: Brenda Ratliff

Dec 2, 2014 By OLFA Creates

Over the past 35 years, OLFA has found a tremendous amount of support in the quilting, sewing, and crafting community. The OLFA rotary cutter, mat and rulers have been become essential cutting tools. Starting this month, we want to turn the spotlight around and focus on the designers, bloggers, quilters and crafters out there who use and love OLFA tools. We are excited to introduce a new monthly feature on the OLFA blog: the OLFA Designer Spotlight!

Our first Designer Spotlight focuses on Brenda Ratliff.

Brenda Ratliff is the owner of Pink Castle Fabrics, a lovely quilt shop in Ann Arbor, MI.  She also has a blog and pattern company at, and she designs fabric for RJR. At home, Brenda has a wonderful 5 year old son and loves to quilt in her spare time. We asked Brenda a few questions, and here are her responses:

What is your favorite OLFA tool and why?
The OLFA 45mm ergonomic rotary cutter! It is comfortable to use and it helps me remember to close the blade.

What size ruler could you not live without?
6” x 24”! I use it for everything!

What is the unsung hero of your sewing box?
My small scissors! I’m constantly trimming threads!

When do you do your most creative work?
At night once my son is in bed.

Are you as clever in the kitchen as you are in your sewing space?
Yes! I love to cook. I have a few published recipes!

What important piece of advice would you offer someone on the brink of quilting?
Invest in quality tools and fabric! It really does matter.

What is something most people would be surprised to know about you?
I hosted a punk rock radio show in college.

Who taught you how to quilt?
My mother taught me to sew, but I learned to quilt using online tutorials.

Brenda created a special quilt project for us to share! This beautiful quilt is called “Greek Crossing”. The finished quilt size is 66” x 66”, made with oversized 18” blocks. It is a great beginner quilt. This quilt is designed with one of Brenda’s favorite traditional blocks, the Greek Cross.
