Scrappy Hello Bunting Mini Quilt

Scrappy Hello Bunting Mini Quilt

Aug 1, 2015 By OLFA Creates

This fun, easy, mini quilt is a great introduction to machine applique. The simple patchwork background lends itself to using up a quilter’s scrappy stash or is ideal for pre-cuts! It’s just the right size for a quilty swap on Instagram.

  • Finished size is 16″ x 16″.
  • Mix and match your favorite scraps, or use a charm pack from a favorite fabric line.
  • Grab a thesaurus and make the message your own! “Welcome” works if creating for a housewarming present, or maybe “love” or “forever” for newlyweds.
  • Share your completed mini quilt using #hellominiquilt

(64) 2.5” fabric scraps (about 3/8 yd. total)
20” x 20” backing fabric
19” x 19” batting
2.5” x 72” binding fabric
1 fat quarter or scraps for applique bunting pieces
Steam 2 Seam or Heat & Bond

  1. Cut (64) 2.5” squares out of scrappy fabric.
  2. Piece into 4-patch blocks, creating 16 squares.

  3. Assemble 4-patch blocks into 4 rows. Each row will have (4) 4-patch blocks.
  4. Assemble rows into quilt top.
  5. Print your own bunting and “hello” templates, remembering the words will need to be a reversed mirror image.

  6. Trace bunting 5 times and hello once on Steam 2 Seam or Heat & Bond.

  7. Remove the backing from one side. Iron onto fabric – sticky side down.
  8. Cut on the lines using OLFA rotary cutter and ruler.
  9. Remove the remaining backing. Place applique pieces where you would like them on your quilt top.
  10. Iron into place.
  11. Sew around the edges of each piece using the blanket stitch on your sewing machine.
  12. Quilt and bind using your preferred methods.
